It may be the source of inspiration, the source of a truth or a source of a lie. The camera takes these sources and translates them into the photographer's visual language. Obscured or cropped out, the source may not be apparent. It may be the light, the earth, the subjects living or man made, or space and time itself. The source is the root or cause of the image. It's what makes the camera be brought up to the eye.
